Hello Beautiful Soul,

You’re here.

You’re alive.

Think about that for a moment.

You actually got out alive.

I know when you were in it, there were times you felt like you were dying inside. And even though you’re out now, you may still have a way to go before you feel truly alive again, inside and out.

Beautiful Soul, I know they took a lot.

But they didn’t take everything.

Who you truly are, who you were always meant to be, is still inside you.

And my friend—I feel like I can call you that—you are going to come back fully.

I know this because I’ve been there too.

I know what it feels like to lose yourself inside a relationship and then have to find your way back.

I was only 15 years old when I entered a relationship like this. It continued for 23 years.

Twenty-three years is a long time to live inside something you don’t have the words to explain.

Because of the control, isolation and fear, I didn’t tell people what was really happening.

How was I supposed to know what was happening if I didn’t understand it?

The more I understood, the clearer everything became.

And I want to tell you something that changed everything for me.

Understanding was the beginning of my healing.

It hurt like hell to know the truth.

But that understanding also brought me strength.

It helped me wake up.

It helped me see that my life had become a mess—not because I was the problem, but because of what I had been living through.

And even after I left, my journey wasn’t over.

I have children. I was financially ruined. And even though the relationship had ended, the toxic behaviour was still coming at me in different ways.

In some ways, the leaving was the easy part.

What came afterwards really took its toll on me.

I had to learn even more.

I had to understand what had happened to me and why I felt the way I did. I had to learn how years of certain behaviours had affected my confidence, my identity and the way I saw myself.

I learned through quiet moments.

I learned by reading articles like this one.

I learned by finally understanding things that I couldn’t understand when I was living through them.

And that is why I’m writing this for you.

Not as someone who has all the answers.

But as someone who has walked this road.

So let’s talk about what happened.

You may have heard some of these words before, but I want you to read them slowly.

Take each one in for what it really is.

So let’s talk about what happened.

You may have heard some of these words before, but I want you to read them slowly.

Take each one in for what it really is.

Manipulation.

Emotional abuse.

Constant criticism.

Control.

And the impact of living with these things for years can feel enormous.

Your confidence can be hit.

Your sense of identity can be shaken.

You can begin questioning your own decisions.

You can lose sight of who you were.

And eventually, you can start believing that maybe you really are the problem.

But Beautiful Soul, this is where your healing can begin.

Not with judgement.

With compassion.

Accept That the Relationship Was Toxic

I think one of the biggest challenges after I left was accepting what had actually happened.

You may notice that you play things down.

Perhaps you tell yourself:

Maybe it wasn’t that bad.

Maybe he or she had a difficult childhood.

Maybe if I had tried harder, things would have changed.

There can be a reason we do this.

It is painful to fully acknowledge what happened.

And when you’ve spent years doubting yourself, accepting your own reality can feel frightening.

But there comes a point when you have to stop doubting yourself.

You have to allow yourself to say:

Yes. This relationship was toxic.

Yes. It caused me pain.

And yes, what happened to me mattered.

You don’t need to minimise it anymore.

You don’t need to make excuses for what hurt you.

You can begin telling yourself the truth.

And Beautiful Soul, I want you to gently ask yourself:

What part of me do I feel like I lost?

Don’t rush your answer.

Just sit with it.

Why Do You Still Miss Them?

Let’s keep this part simple.

You may still miss them because of the highs.

A toxic relationship isn’t necessarily painful every single moment.

There may have been beautiful moments.

There may have been affection, connection, laughter, promises and times when you believed everything was finally going to be okay.

And those highs can make the lows incredibly confusing.

You may find yourself remembering the good moments and wondering whether you made the wrong decision by leaving.

But be honest with yourself.

There were more lows.

Your heart and your sense of safety have been deeply affected by the games, confusion and behaviour that were not love.

Missing someone doesn’t mean you should go back.

Missing someone doesn’t mean leaving was a mistake.

And missing the good moments doesn’t erase the painful ones.

Sometimes you are grieving what you hoped the relationship could have been.

It’s Time to Stop Blaming Yourself

This is where I want you to begin letting go of the guilt.

You don’t have to blame yourself anymore.

Perhaps you are someone who sees the best in people.

I know I am.

And I don’t believe that’s a weakness.

It’s a blessing.

Being compassionate doesn’t make you foolish.

Loving someone doesn’t make you weak.

Wanting to believe that someone could change doesn’t make you stupid.

You don’t have to change that beautiful part of yourself.

What you can change is abandoning yourself in order to keep someone else happy.

You can learn to love people without losing yourself.

And you can learn to recognise when someone else’s behaviour is harming you.

Rebuilding Your Self-Worth

Beautiful Soul, this is where I want to help you rebuild your self-worth.

Because they may have chipped away at your confidence for years.

Perhaps you don’t trust yourself anymore.

Perhaps you question your decisions.

Perhaps you don’t even know what you like or want anymore.

But I want you to think about something.

Your decision to leave was you listening to yourself.

Somewhere underneath all the confusion, fear and self-doubt, there was still a part of you that knew something wasn’t right.

You listened.

You left.

That matters.

Your healing isn’t about suddenly becoming a completely different woman.

It is about remembering who you are.

And then learning to trust her again.

You Are Allowed to Rest

One of the things I had to learn was that I could rest.

I could relax without feeling lazy.

I could have a quiet day without feeling useless.

For years, there had been this feeling that what I did or didn’t do was constantly being judged.

There were attacks on my appearance.

My capability.

My decisions.

The feeling that nothing was ever right.

I couldn’t do anything right.

Do you know how that feels?

It’s exhausting.

When you live like that for years, you can start to believe that you really are incapable.

That you’re lazy.

That you’re useless.

That perhaps you really can’t be trusted to make the right decisions.

But then I realised something.

I was allowed to rest.

I was allowed to relax.

I was allowed to have a quiet day.

I was allowed to simply be.

There was nothing wrong with me for needing rest.

And there was nothing wrong with me for not being perfect.

I was allowed to breathe.

That was part of finding my way back home.

Boundaries Are an Act of Self-Love

Healing isn’t about building huge walls around your heart.

It’s about learning where your boundaries are.

It’s about learning that your needs matter too.

You don’t have to over-give to receive love.

You don’t have to constantly prove your worth.

You don’t have to abandon yourself to keep somebody else happy.

Your boundaries are not punishment.

They are an act of self-respect.

And perhaps, after everything you’ve been through, setting boundaries will feel uncomfortable at first.

That’s okay.

You are learning something new.

You’re learning that you can protect your heart without closing it.

Finding Your Way Back Home

Beautiful Soul, I want you to embrace this journey.

Not because everything about healing is easy.

It isn’t.

Some days you won’t want to get out of bed.

Some days you may wonder if you’re actually getting anywhere.

There may be days when the past feels incredibly close.

But better days are coming.

There will be a day when you smile and realise the smile is real.

There will be days when you notice that you haven’t thought about them.

There will be moments when you suddenly realise you’re making decisions without wondering what someone else would think.

There will be moments when shame and guilt begin to drift away.

And one day, perhaps without even noticing it at first, you’ll realise you’re becoming yourself again.

Not the woman you were before.

Someone stronger.

Someone wiser.

Someone who knows herself.

Someone who knows what she deserves.

Someone who can finally breathe.

Someone who understands that she doesn’t have to abandon herself for love.

Beautiful Soul, you are not finished.

You are beginning.

And I want you to remember this:

They may have taken a lot from you, but they did not take everything.

You are still here.

Your story isn’t over.

Your confidence can return.

Your joy can return.

And little by little, you can find your way back home.

Back to yourself.

A Little Something to Take With You

Before you leave this page, take a quiet moment.

Put your hand over your heart.

Take a breath.

And ask yourself:

What part of myself am I ready to bring back home?

Don’t worry about having the perfect answer.

Just listen.

Your healing can begin with listening to yourself again.

With love and light,

From my heart to yours. x
